Wonderful wilderness: discovering the joys of nature

It’s a little sad just how many of us pay hardly any attention to the planet around us. You don’t have to be a die-hard hippy to be able to see the incredible beauty and wonder that’s in the world all around us. But because of the amount of time that so many of us spend in towns and cities, sitting at computers in human-made buildings, it’s rare that you actually get to take the time to enjoy and appreciate the world as it really is. This is why taking a trip that gets you out into nature is one of the best ideas possible. If you’re not sure what the appeal of this is, here are some the best reasons to get yourself stuck out in the wilderness, even for just a little while.

You learn to handle yourself

Being self-sufficient and independent is one of the very best traits that you can have these days. Everything from dates to job interviews often rest on your ability to be a strong, independent person who can take care of themselves. Trips that get you out into the wilderness are fantastic for learning these kinds of skills. Whether you’re building survival shelters or trying to identify berries that are safe to eat, it can be an amazing experience that teaches you a lot about how to handle yourself. A few days living out in the wilderness with nothing but your wits to sustain you can turn even the most die-hard couch potato into someone who’s more than willing to get up if it means getting a job done right!

You discover that you really don’t need your smartphone

For better or worse, the vast majority of people are all but glued to their smartphones. Smartphones are now used for everything from vague web surfing, social media sharing, shopping, and just about anything else that you could possibly think of. This means that it’s incredibly hard to be able to picture a life without a smartphone anymore. However, when you’re put in the wilderness, you realise just how unimportant a smartphone, or just about any other piece of technology for that matter, really is. You don’t need any tech to whip up a quick meal outside your tent or to watch the sunrise, or enjoy the sounds of the natural world around you. Technology might be amazing, but it’s nice to remind yourself now and again that it’s not totally necessary for living a fulfilling and enjoyable life.

It gives you a fresh perspective on the world around you

Sadly, the perspective many of us have on the natural world is one of separation. It’s the kind of thing that you see on TV or online but never really interact with on any kind of direct level. Getting out into the wilderness is fantastic because it serves as a reminder that the natural world is out there and that no manner of technology could ever hope to replace the incredible beauty that the world has to offer.
