How vacations change after you have kids

Try as we might keep them the same, vacations will change more than you think after children.
In a few respects, this will be for the worse, and, in many respects, it will be for the better. But mostly, it’ll just be different. Making comparisons to vacations before and after children serves little purpose. Family vacations and traveling with children does change the flow and the dynamic of the experience entirely.

No More Last Minute

Well, not quite. Spontaneity is a great asset to hold on to once you have kids. Not only does it keep your passion, as parents, for travel alive, but keeps your little ones on the ball and excited about travel.
There are, however, things you have to think about more seriously when you have children. School holidays and their routine for example. Your life will undoubtedly be more hectic. When it comes to spontaneity you still need a touch of planning. Whereas when you were a care-free backpacker in your twenties you could jump on a plane at the drop of a hat you now need to think about not only your schedule but that of your partner and your kids too.
You can still have a last minute getaway but you need to really pick your moment.

Accommodation Choices Change

Believe it or not, there are hostels that are family friendly but realistically do you want to be taking your tot to a party hostel in the heart of Budapest in the middle of summer? As much of an adventure as it may be it is safe to say that no one will be getting much sleep.
Price wise, traveling as a family can be just as cheap, if not cheaper than traveling solo or as a couple. Airbnb offers you the opportunity to hire a whole apartment that will comfortably fit the whole family. Not only is this cost-effective but means that your kids can have a quiet bedtime routine and space to run around in what feels like their own home.

No More Romance

Again, this is somewhat of a myth. It just depends on where you go.
If you opt for an all-inclusive resort holiday, for example, you and your partner can still have some couples time alone without the children. Many resorts have kids clubs run by highly-trained, and very experienced child care specialists who will keep your little ones happy, active and learning while as parents you can get some time alone to rekindle the romance. It might not be as good as an adults-only resort, but you’re parents now, so that’s not an option.
Book yourselves in for a couples massage while the kids go to a pizza making class or hire a car for the day to quietly explore the local town while they get taken on a treasure hunt followed by a pool party.
Although a family vacation is about spending time together it is also a great opportunity for everyone to get what they want. Vacations after children do not have to change all that much, you have to adapt your expectation and find a balance that works for you and your brood.

No More Relaxation

Like we said there are ways and means of getting a touch of normality’ in your vacations but there are some things that will change. The amount of rest and relaxation is reduced significantly when traveling and holidaying with children but, again, you adapt.
If you want to relax for awhile, then ask your partner to go out with the kids. Not only does this give you a chance to unwind and have some alone time but gives your children and partner some valuable one-to-one time.
Likewise, when your partner wants a lazy morning you can take the kids off for a different kind of activity.

It’s All About The Kids

This is another yes and no answer. It is true that if you are going on vacation with children that their wishes will be the focal point but that is not to say that you can’t do the things you want to do.
Do you want to go dolphin watching at sunrise? So will they. Do you want to take a cheesy photo next to the Leaning Tower of Pisa? They’ll love it. Do you want to learn how to cook a classic Thai curry? Use half the chili and your little ones will love getting involved.

Vacations Change More Than You Think After Children

Yes, your style duration and pace of vacation will change after children but that doesn’t mean that you can’t still have the holiday of your dreams.

By adapting your expectations and doing a little more planning than you used to your vacation will still be the highlight of the year, for you, your partner, and your kids.
